A small team that got tired of unpredictable bills.
darkship is built by Rock Application Systems, LLC (RockApps), a product studio. We needed feature flags that were simple to run, fast on the hot path and honest about cost, so we built them.
We ship software for clients and for ourselves. Again and again we reached for flags to ship dark and reveal safely, and again and again the invoice depended on things we could not forecast: seats, monthly active users, evaluations.
So the thesis is narrow on purpose: simple, fast feature flags with predictable pricing for dev teams. We would rather do that well than be a platform for everything.
Principles
Predictable beats clever
Flat plans with included limits. If we cannot explain the invoice in one sentence, the model is wrong.
Never be the outage
Evaluation is local and fail-static. Billing and quota problems fail open. Your app does not depend on our uptime.
Keep your users yours
We do not store evaluation context. The less we hold, the less we can lose or misuse.
No lock-in
OpenFeature first, a documented REST API and signed webhooks. Leaving should be a one-line change.
